Have you ever noticed how the first few things you do in the morning can dictate how well your day goes? A big realisation for me over time has been that planning and habit go hand in hand. You need to create good habits around yourself for your business activities, otherwise you fall into that overwhelming space of goals not being achieved, and overwhelm and self doubt creeping through that door again. If you can create better habits in your business, you’ll be more likely to succeed. February’s focus in the WE Members Club is Productivity. Productivity is something all business owners struggle with at one point or another, but the great news is that it’s more than achievable if you’re willing to form new daily habits that will lead to you actually getting things done!
A productive day stems from what actions you take first thing in the morning. The energy you have within the first hour or two of when you wake up is the energy that stays with you throughout the day. A few small shifts in your morning routine can make all the difference when it comes to completing your daily tasks for your business. Below is a list of four morning habits that are easy to implement on a daily basis. Exercise. Exercising every morning can seem intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. There’s no rule saying you have to do an hour of high-intensity cardio every day. Something simpler like 15 minutes of yoga or going for a short walk each morning can have a similar impact. Experiment with different styles of exercise and find something that works for you and your body. Its been said that people who regularly exercise in the morning before work often feel more positive about their work-life balance. You know exercise is a form of taking care of your body and doing something that’s just for you, so getting your workout done in the morning means you can continue on with your day knowing that you’ve already done something to take care of yourself. Eat a well-balanced breakfast. Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day. Eating the right foods in the morning will jump start your energy levels to help get you going. Things like oatmeal, eggs, avocados, and yogurt are perfect for giving you the boost you need to start your day off right. While you’re eating your breakfast, limit your distractions by leaving your phone and your computer off. Take your time and enjoy your meal. Drink lemon water. Drinking lots of water throughout the day has many benefits, but adding in a slice or two of lemon to it in the morning gives its powers an extra boost! Not only does lemon water improve your digestive health, prevent bad breath, and increase your metabolism, it lowers your stress levels. Even if you had a good night’s sleep, there might be days where you wake up and begin to feel stressed about everything you might feel behind on and all that still needs to be done. Drinking something that lowers your stress levels first thing in the morning will help put your mind at ease, and focus so you can come up with a plan of action. Write down your plan for the day. Some time ago I committed to spending the first 20 minutes of my workday to planning. That's all I asked of myself. No lofty goals, no time consuming actions to take, no hard tasks. I made it easy for myself. I get my coffee or tea. I sit in a nice space. I work from a pretty diary. And I sit down, I reflect, and I plan out my day. I will tell you something about this process. To start with, it was quite hard. I had my goals but I would struggle to translate those big picture goals with picking the most important actions to do right now. But over time, with learning and with practise, I have become better. My planning has become a habit. It doesn't feel right to me to start my day now without sitting down with my diary first. If my day gets off track, my go to 'reset button' is a cup of tea and time with the diary. And the benefits to me are so clear. Over time, my process has become finely tuned so I am spending less time flicking through to do's and prioritising, and more time analysing what has worked well and what I can transfer on this week, today.
